Brake Standard Open (BSO) No 9046. The metal and wooden flooring has been completed in the seating end of the coach and we are in contact with the supplier to order the vinyl flooring. External doors continue to be repaired and the guards compartment is receiving more coats of paint. As the weather is warming up, rubbing down and filling on the coach exterior has started. Crew mess room/ ‘Command Bunker’ Work continues on replacing the exterior wooden slats and repainting Garden Maintenance The grass around the Furnaces Tearoom and Railway House have been cut and the whole area looks much neat and tidy. The numerous flower beds at both Spring Village and Horsehay and Dawley stations are looking good again this year. A lot of hard work goes into making these area attractive and welcoming to our passengers. More tree saplings have been planted along our boundary at the Lawley station site Permanent Way (P-Way) Ongoing maintenance of the running line is taking place with regular track walks to ensure keys in place and any defects are identified and remedied quickly. Boundary fences and security issues are also regularly checked and maintained. For the first time in a number of years, we ran a fish and chip special on Saturday, which was hauled by North British diesel hydraulic No. 27414 “Tom”. A large shunt of the yard to up most of the day in order to get “Rocket” out of the shed and “Tom” and the train marshaled into the platform road. The special was a success, with lots of positive feedback. The fish and chips smelled lovely as well! This is something we will look to run again in July. Sunday saw “Rocket” in steam and hauling trains. The sun shone, and it was very hot on the footplate. We welcomed a couple of guests for footplate experiences during the day and it was pleasing to hear how much they had enjoyed it. There were lots of passengers again, and there were a lot of ice creams being eaten! We are now arranging for contractors to come onsite and start renewing the drainage along the track bed. Lawley Station Work has started again on making platform improvements. Our Royal Special trains ran on Sunday and Monday to celebrate the King’s Coronation. We welcomed lots of visitors over the two days and also ran a very successful cream tea service on Sunday which was completely sold out. We currently have an appeal to buy a new boiler for our narrow gauge steam tram. Tickets cost £14.99 to include meal and train ride and must be pre booked from our website www.telfordsteamrailway.co.uk/events The railway is next open on Sunday 14th May. Peckett and Sons steam engine No 1722 “Rocket” will be hauling our trains First departure from Spring Village station (TF4 2NF - free car park) is at 11am with further departures at 12pm, 1:30pm, 2:30pm and 3:30pm. GWR 56xx 0-6-2 tank engine No 5619 The remaining boiler tubes have been swept clean. Permanent way (P-Way) No further track at Horsehay and Dawley has been lifted this week. A number of sleepers have been de chaired in Spring Village yard. These sleepers will either be recycled, or sold for garden use. This week the volunteers have mainly been getting everything ready for the Multiple Mayhem event over the bank holiday weekend. The Pacers were all given a good clean inside with the seats vacuumed and dusted, and the floors mopped. Final maintenance checks were made and Spring Village platform and yard was shunted to get everything into position to begin on Saturday. The event didn’t get off to the best start with the class 108 being unavailable for the first train. Class 144 Pacer No 144013 was used instead. Our engineers worked their magic though and the 108 was soon back up and running. They were called upon again later in the day when Class 142 Pacer No. 142004 developed a fault, but this was quickly resolved. We were not so busy on the first day, but perhaps this was because we are not normally open on Saturdays. We had many more visitors on the Sunday, and more again on Bank Holiday Monday. Many travelled long distances just to attend our event. It was great to see the railway busy, and people enjoying themselves. The Pacers and the 108 performed faultlessly after the first day, and we were able to keep to time. There were a number of shunt moves after each arrival at Spring Village to get the next unit ready for departure, and with an intensive timetable, there always seemed to be something moving! The Phoenix Miniature Railway was in action on all three days, as was the model railway exhibition and Furnaces tearoom, which were all very popular. The weather was (just about) dry enough for the 2nd hand bookstore to open for the first time this season. Typically there were no books available on Pacers or DMUs that we could sell, still there is always next time! Thank you to all our fantastic volunteers who have worked so hard to make the event happen, and to all our visitors for making it such a success. We hope to see you again at our next multiple mayhem event in June. We currently have an appeal to buy a new boiler for our narrow gauge steam tram.
