Ruston and Hornsby 0-4-0 diesel mechanical No. 313394 “Jammo” This loco will be leaving the railway shortly to go on hire to the Chasewater Railway. Photo charter On Saturday 23rd September the railway was hired for the day by the Sutton Coldfield Railway Society. GWR 56XX 0-6-2T No 5619 was in steam on passenger and freight trains, with staged photo opportunities and run pasts taking place at various locations along the line and at Horsehay and Dawley station. The group were able to have footplate and brakevan rides during the day. Guided tours of the loco shed and yards were given, together with a history walk of the surrounding area. Finally a guided walk of the trackbed to Doseley Halt was provided. Permanent Way and Infrastructure
The P-Way gang were out in force on Saturday working on the running line close to Heath Hill Tunnel. Rails and sleepers were lifted, the ballast dug out and the rails and sleepers put back in. The line was then ‘jack and packed’ and tamped. On Sunday we had our ‘Anything Goes Diesel Gala. This was a great success with good passenger numbers. In action on the day were BR Class 08 diesel 08757 ‘Eagle’, North British diesel hydraulic No. 27414 ‘Tom’, Ruston and Hornsby diesel mechanical No. 382824 ‘Hector’, Class 142 Pacer No. 142058 with Ruston and Hornsby diesel mechanical No. 313394 ‘Jammo’ making a surprise appearance on passenger trains in the afternoon. We have had lots of very positive feedback about the event which is great to hear. One of our military veteran friends, Colin, had his first ride on a train since 1955! Hopefully it won’t be as long again before his next one. One of our volunteers has successfully passsed out as a diesel driver. Congratulations! We have released a new video on out YouTube channel giving an up date on all the things that have been going on at the railway. We are really excited to share this with you to see the progress that we are making in lots of areas. Hopefully you will find it interesting, please like and subscribe to our channel for more videos like this. https://youtu.be/kMwXrOruxxQ?si=hv29R1moy5VDxSpV We need your help! A new steam boiler for our tram has been sourced, and is available to buy for £8500. Not only is this approximately half the price we were quoted to build a new boiler, but will also mean that our tram will be back in steam and working much quicker as well. Please help us to buy this boiler before it is too late, by donating to our steam tram boiler appeal. https://gofund.me/2ff35805 Every penny donated makes a massive difference to us. Thank you for your support. The railway is next open on Sunday 24th September when GWR 56XX 0-6-2T No. 5619 will be hauling our trains. Departures will be from Spring Village (TF4 2NF - free car park) and a special timetable will be in operation Tickets £10 Adults, £8 Children and, £30 Family (2 Adults and 2 Children). 5619 passed its steam test on Thursday and is now back in service. Many thanks to our fantastic volunteers for their hard work, sweat, blood and tears over many months to get her operational again. 5619 is due to be working our trains on the following Sundays; 10th, 24th September and 1st October. The plan is for 5619 to then haul our Polar Express trains in November and December. North British diesel hydraulic No. 27414 ‘Tom’ Tom has had new compressor drive belts fitted and a new stainless steel through exhaust. This will let the engine ‘breathe’ and of course, sound better! Brake Standard Open (BSO) No. 9406 Vinyl flooring for the rear part of the coach has now arrived and will be fitted shortly. Once down, the seats and fittings in this half of the coach can be refitted, as well as the bar area. This will then leave just the ‘guards’ part of the coach to complete. Permanent way and infrastructure Further ballast has been removed from the sleeper ends of track in platform road at the platform extension. The track will be realigned closer to the platform edge to enable passengers to leave the coaches easier during Polar. Telford Steam Railway recently signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant. The covenant is a pledge to understand that those who serve or have served in the armed forces, and their families, should be treated with fairness and respect in communities, economy and society they serve with their lives. On Sunday the railway was proud to host our first Veterans Breakfast morning. Around 20 veterans and their families attended, and everyone enjoyed the food and the chance for a chat and a catch up. It was fantastic to be able to do this for the veterans, and we hope that it becomes a regular event. Also on Sunday, the railway was proud to support ‘Scarecrow Day’, which is held in the village around Horsehay Pool, and is organised by the Friends of Horsehay Pool. We had two scarecrows on show at the railway, and donated prizes to their raffle, and offered travel incentives on the day to anyone who purchased a raffle ticket. There were lots of people walking around the village and the event was a great success The railway had a stand at the Guildex Exhibition in Stafford over the weekend. Did anyone see us there? Thanks to Doug, Mark and Ian for the additional information used in this update and for the use of their photos.
