In a change to our planned running days, Peckett and Sons 0-4-0 saddle tank No. 1722 “Rocket” will be hauling trains for the public on Monday 10th April. Everyone is welcome to come and join us. Our normal fares and timetable will be in operation, with the first train leaving Spring Village at 11am. MK2 Brake Standard Open (BSO) No. 9046. The rotten areas of the wooden floor continued to be taken up and replaced. Interior painting continues, including in the guards area. More work has also taken place in the the new bar area. Class 142 and 144 Pacers More maintenance and cleaning has taken place ready for the ‘Multiple Mayhem’ event on April 29th - 1 May. Permanent Way (P-way) More rail recovery has taken place at Horsehay and has been loaded onto the Lowmac. The rails have been removed from the furthers panel of track at the Barrow Crossing. The old rails (mostly scrap) and wooden sleepers (mostly rotten) will be taken up back to Horsehay and Dawley station (our current limit of operations). Once this has been done, contractors will come in to install new drainage pipes along the line. The plan is to then relay the track with concrete sleepers and flat bottomed rail back to the Barrow Crossing which will be laid to passenger operation standards. The Command Bunker/Crew mess room continues be refurbished with wooden slats being replaced and a waterproof membrane added. A new hand rail has been installed to the walkway created in front of the old signal box at Horsehay and Dawley station. The waiting room at Spring Village station has been emptied ready for passenger use. The new picnic benches that have been made on site have now all been painted. These will be placed at our picnic area and Furnaces tearoom. A full on board dress rehearsal for our Alice’s Adventures to Wonderland event took place at Spring Village station. The costumes look fantastic and the event is going to be spectacular. Tickets are available for the 8th and 9th April from our website. Sunday was our Volunteer Open Day. A shunt of the yard took place to get Ruston and Hornsby No. 382824 ‘Hector’ to the platform at Spring Village and coupled to the TOAD. We ran two tours of the site. Each tour was well attended and they were shown around our steam engines; Peckett and Sons No. 1722 ‘Rocket’, GWR 56XX 5619 and the steam tram, and our BSO being restored. They were then given a brakevan ride behind ‘Hector’ to Horsehay and Dawley station where they visited a Pacer, and saw the P-Way gang working trackside. We then went to see the model railway exhibition before enjoying a cup of tea or coffee at the tearoom. Finally those that wanted to, and were able, were offered a guided walk along the formation to Doseley Halt (two miles there and back) to see firsthand our expansion plans and the potential that the line has. Those on the second walk did not want to stop at Doseley Halt though, and continued on the formation to Lightmoor (another mile away) to see where our line will eventually join the mothballed track into what was the Ironbridge Power station (our ultimate ambition). Everybody seemed to enjoy themselves. We have had an increase in membership and a number of those wanting to start volunteering with us. It was a fantastic day, and I can’t wait to do it all again in July. Our thanks to all our current volunteers for their support of these events. It couldn’t happen without them. Volunteer Liaison Officer update 21 March 2023
With less than 3 weeks to go until we open to the public, there is plenty of activity at the railway. In a change to our planned running days, Peckett and Sons 0-4-0 saddle tank No. 1722 “Rocket” will be hauling trains for the public on Monday 10th April. Everyone is welcome to come and join us. Our normal fares and timetable will be in operation, with the first train leaving Spring Village at 11am (The Alice’s Adventures to Wonderland event is now running on just Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th April only. It is not running on the 10th April). MK2 Brake Standard Open (BSO) No. 9046. New steel replacement under flooring for the coach has arrived and will be fitted shortly. More rotten wood has been removed from the floor and replaced with new. Interior painting continues on walls and doors. Costings for the remainder of the vinyl floor have been made and await purchase and delivery. Although great progress has been made on restoring this coach, it will sadly not be available for use for the start of the season. The current plan is for it to return to service during the summer months. BR class 08 diesel 08757 “Eagle” The oil change on the loco has been completed, and on Saturday she passed a loaded test run between Spring Village and Lawley pushing Rushton Hornsby No. 525947 ‘Rusty’, North British No. 27414 ‘Tom’ and 37263 as weight. The 08 is now serviceable. Great Western Railway (GWR) 56XX 0-6-2 No. 5619 Pipe work has been removed in preparation for its repair to take place Permanent way (P-Way) Rail continues to be cut and scrapped. The BUG and the engineers train was once again at Horsehay and Dawley station to load the reusable rail onto the lowmac. There is still some rail to be loaded next weekend, but all of it has been brought up to the station. Points were greased on the running line at Lawley. A tree was found to have fallen close to the line near Heath hill tunnel. This was cut up to prevent any potential damage to the running line and rolling stock. The ‘Command Bunker’ (which is the volunteers mess room and holds the tea making facilities, therefore making it the most important building at the railway!) is being repaired. New wooden paneling is being fitted to the walls replacing those that have rotted. Picnic benches have been made, ready for siting at the tearoom to provide much needed outdoor seating. More tidying of the Cosford Shed and yards continue with unwanted items either being sold, recycled or scrapped. With thanks to Doug and Ian for the additional information used in this update. A volunteer open day will take place on Sunday 26th March. A morning (10am) and afternoon (1pm) session will take place for prospective new volunteers and members, to see the work that we do and the mental and physical benefits that volunteering at the railway can bring. Visitors will be able to see our steam and diesel locomotives, visit a coach undergoing restoration, see P-Way demonstrations and enjoy a brake van ride to Horsehay and Dawley station. At all times, existing volunteers will be on hand to explain and discuss their roles and answer any questions. Please see our website for full information. The floor has been repainted Permanent Way (P-Way) The rail as been measured and marked at 60ft lengths from Horsehay and Dawley station southwards to see where the join will need to go so that the fishplates won’t foul the new barrow crossing when it is installed. The engineers train and BUG were then brought to the platform where the scrap rail was gas cut and loaded onto the BUG’s trailer. The remainder of the scrap rail was then moved up from the barrow crossing where all but 3 of the rails were cut and loaded. The remainder will be completed next weekend. Lineside and drainage clearance took place just south of the station, the melting snow had causes some flooding, and reminded us why the new drainage here is so important.
