The road crossing between the loco shed and Spring Village yard has been replaced and upgraded to make the crossing safer for cars and pedestrians. The track has also been realigned which will allow bogie vehicles to enter the shed for the first time. This will now allow us to maintain and restore our coaches under cover when required. Replacing the road crossing was a job that we have wanted to do for a number of years and it is great to see it completed.
North British diesel hydraulic No. 27414 “TOM” was been withdrawn from service for gearbox repairs. Class 142 Pacer No. 142058 was in use on passengers services on Sunday 9th June, and proved popular with our passengers. We also held our first Pacer driver and guard experience days on the Saturday and Sunday. All of the participants thoroughly enjoyed their time on the Pacer and we have received very positive feedback about the experiences. This is something we will look to do again next year. We ran our second Fish and Chip special of the season on Saturday. This was another sell out, including our first coach party. BR class 08 diesel No. 08757 “Eagle” hauled the train, the fish and chips were hot and tasty, and everyone had an enjoyable time. This is a great way to get people who would not normally visit a heritage railway to see what we have to offer. Hopefully some of them will return for a running day or special event. Our Father’s Day Flyer experience (footplate ride on our steam engine No. 5619 and a meal in the tearoom) have sold out. Our gardeners continue to keep our station gardens looking fantastic with those at Horsehay and Dawley looking particularly impressive. We had a visitor to the railway on Friday who enjoyed a Great British Railway Journey in the cab of 5619. They also helped with the ongoing restoration of BR Class 03 diesel No. D2051 in the loco shed. Look out for the program which is due to be broadcast in April 2025. Thanks to Ben, Ian, Doug, Mark, Shaun and Paul for the additional information and photographs used in this update. Our signalbox at Lightmoor Junction has been broken into and vandalised. The intruders forced demolished brickwork to gain entry to the box and then proceeded to smash every window, throw paint around and destroyed historical signaling equipment. It is going to cost the railway £1000s to restore and is especially sickening for the volunteers as we have already had to do it once before after an arson attack in 2016. This unnecessary damage will divert precious money and volunteer time away from keeping the railway running this year. We are asking our supporters to help by donating whatever they can to help us restore the signalbox once again to its 1950’s glory. https://www.telfordsteamrailway.co.uk/make-a-donation-to-the-railway.html The replacement of the road crossing between the loco shed and Spring Village station has started this week. Contractors are on site and making good progress in replacing the rails and upgrading the crossing. The line into the shed is also being realigned will allow bogie vehicles to gain access. This will mean that our coaches will now be able to be maintained and restored under cover. This work is due to a week to complete. The lighting in the loco shed has been replaced with led bulbs, which give us brighter lights at a much cheaper cost. On Sunday we ran our first Exotic Express trains, which featured our friends from Exotic Zoo Telford bringing animals onto the train to allow passengers to learn all about them, see them up close and even hold them! This was very popular and will return on 4 August and 1 September. Full details on our website. Thanks to Shaun, Joshua and Doug for the additional information used in this update.
