MK 2 Brake Standard Open (BSO) No. 9046

The internal window surrounds have been completed. Painting and staining of interior walls continues, and some floor panels have been lifted ready for replacement. Wood for the bar area has arrived and this has started to be built.

MK2 Tourist Standard Open (TSO) Nos. 5193 and 5148

These two coaches are planned to be in service at our Alice’s adventures to Wonderland event. Internal cleaning and maintenance is continuing.

BR Class 08 diesel No. 08757 “Eagle”

The refurbished head cylinder has been fitted to the engine. An improved oil filter system is being fabricated which will improve maintenance and performance of the loco.

BR class 37 diesel No. 37263.

A new automatic voltage regulator has been fitted, and tested.

LMS CCTZ 6 wheel covered wagon

Having been moved last week. Everything above the chassis has now been removed (as the new owners requested). Some metal work and salvageable items have been kept, the rest has been either scrapped or burnt. It arrived at the railway over 40 years ago but has had little work done to it during that time. Hopefully it will now have a more positive future.

Tele handler training is taking place over concurrent weekends. Training to use the crane wagon will shortly take place as well.

Tidying of the site continues, with more wood being cut ready for lighting up purposes.

With thanks to Doug and Dave for the additional information provided for this update

A volunteer open day will take place on Sunday 26th March. A morning (10am) and afternoon (1pm) session will take place for prospective new volunteers and members, to see the work that we do and the mental and physical benefits that volunteering at the railway can bring. Visitors will be able to see our steam and diesel locomotives, visit a coach undergoing restoration, see P-Way demonstrations and enjoy a brake van ride to Horsehay and Dawley station. At all times, existing volunteers will be on hand to explain and discuss their roles and answer any questions. Please see our website for full information.

Please consider supporting Telford Steam Railway through the Telford and Wrekin Community Lottery, which is open to anyone in the UK over 16 years old. This weekly draw gives you the opportunity to win prizes up to £25,000. Tickets cost £1 per week and 50p from each ticket sale goes directly to the railway.

Andrew Barclay 0-6-0ST No. 2138 “Swordfish”

This loco left the railway on Tuesday 14th February. It proved very popular with crews during its stay and we are sorry to see it go. Thanks once again to the loco owner and Buckinghamshire Railway Centre for allowing Swordfish to haul our Polar Express trains last year.

Great Western Railway Class 56XX 0-6-2T No. 5619.

Our flagship locomotive returned to the railway from secure storage on Friday 17th February. Our thanks to Andrew Goodman for his help in bringing No.5619 back home. The loco is now under cover in the shed.

Ruston and Hornsby 0-4-0 Diesel Mechanical No. 382824 “Hector”

With No.5619 going into the shed, Hector is now back in Spring Village yard. Whilst still being worked on by her dedicated team, Hector is operational, and was soon in use shunting stock. It also took a trip to Lawley for possibly the first time ever.

North British 0-4-0 Diesel Hydraulic No. 27414 “Tom”

Tom has also vacated the shed, now that it is operational and is back at Spring Village. It too saw recent use shunting stock in the yard.

BR Class 08 Diesel 08757 “Eagle”

A replacement cylinder head has been obtained and refurbished, and it will shortly be fitted onto the locomotive. After testing, Eagle will hopefully be operational and back in service.

Class 142 Pacer No. 142004

Work has been undertaken on this locomotive by it’s owning group

LMS CCTZ 6 Wheel covered carriage

This vehicle has been sold. It has been moved from a siding to the front of the yard so that it can prepared for departure.

Patrolman training has taken place for some of our volunteers. This mixture of classroom and practical training was delivered by Bycroft Consulting, and everyone involved found it very useful and informative.

Permanent Way (P-Way)

The rail brought up from Doseley has been measured and graded. Approx 30% of it will be scrapped. The rest will be reused in the yard at Spring Village.

Lineside Clearance is continuing, this time at the Barrow Crossing south of Horsehay and Dawley station.

A volunteer open day will take place on Sunday 26th March. A morning (10am) and afternoon (1pm) session will take place for prospective new volunteers and members, to see the work that we do and the mental and physical benefits that volunteering at the railway can bring. MK2 Brake Standard Open (BSO) No. 9046.

Work continues in the guard's area, replacing wooden panels and painting the internal walls a lovely shade of yellow. External doors have been temporarily re-hung to check for clearances. The corridor floor will need to be lifted to check the condition of the frame underneath. The design of the bar area has been completed, and materials ordered. The lighting contacter has been repaired

MK2 Tourist Standard Open (TSO) No. 5220.

The toilet area continues to be stripped out ready for its refurbishment. A new toilet support template has been made.

The redundant 24-volt supplies have been removed from the TSOs.

Class 142 Pacer No. 142058.

The oil leak has been fixed.

Gearbox repairs have taken place on the mini digger.

Permanent Way (P-Way)

24 more rails have been brought up to Horsehay and Dawley from the track bed between Barrow Crossing and Doseley Halt. This phase of the eventual relaying of track to Doseley has now been completed. The next job is to measure and sort out the rail for reuse or scrap.

More lineside clearance and burning has taken place, this time at Doseley.

Tidying up of the shed and tram yard continues, with more wood being cut up ready for the running season.

The Phoenix Miniature Railway volunteers have been site preparing for their 2023 season, which starts on April 8th.

A volunteer open day will take place on Sunday 26th March. A morning and afternoon session will take place for prospective new volunteers and members, to see the work that we do and the mental and physical benefits that volunteering at the railway can bring. Volunteer Liaison Update - 06/02/2023

MK2 Brake Standard Open (BSO) No. 9046

Work continues on the guard's exterior double doors. No further work with the floor this week as we are obtaining prices for work and materials. The consensus is to go with the original floor design.

An external door has been replaced.

BR class 08 diesel 08757 "Eagle"

More oil has been drained, and cleaning of the engine compartment has commenced. The oil pump continues to be fitted and wired in. The oil filters are being cleaned. Hopefully, a replacement cylinder has been sourced and will arrive at the railway soon.

Permanent Way (P-Way)

More lineside clearance has taken place along the line. The volunteers did a great job of cutting the brash back above the drainage channel, which not only makes the lineside look neat and tidy, but also allows the water to drain away quicker. We plan to continue this work along the whole of the line.

Rail has continued to be brought up from the track bed between the Barrow Crossing and Doseley Halt. Around 30 lengths were moved this weekend. A sleeper 'pad' has been installed at the end of the line to enable our road/rail vehicles to get on and off the track easier.

Tidying up of the Cosford shed continues with a new stores area being created (after the building had been weather proofed first).

The woodstore (depleted after Polar) is being restocked with wood cut to the correct length for lighting up our steam engines.

A volunteer open day will take place on Sunday 26th March. A morning and afternoon session will take place for prospective new volunteers and members, to see the work that we do and the mental and physical benefits that volunteering at the railway can bring.
