Are you able to help us with our appeal for GWR 56xx Class No. 5619?

​Over Polar Express 2023 we had an issue with the firebars on the loco. They had a tendency to turn into boomerangs after prolonged use which had the potential to cause major problems. Our engineers and crews did a stirling job in keeping the loco going. We then ordered a new set of firebars, 54 in total, and the loco is fully fit for traffic. The cost of the firebars was a substantial investment. You can see from the pictures below the difference of the old bars compared to a new one.

We would like to invite our supporters the opportunity to donate a 'firebar' towards the total cost of purchasing these firebars. Each bar is £71 and if you gift aid it then the Society can claim another 25%, or £17.75, towards the loco. For each person who buys a firebar not only will your generosity be acknowledged on a plaque but you will also get a ride on the footplate of 5619 when its's in steam (subject to operational availability).
