Ride on the standard gauge railway
Your day rover ticket allows you unlimited travel on that day's services.
We run a mixture of heritage steam and diesel locomotives plus some heitage diesel multiple units. Please check our Loco Roster page to see what locos we are planning to run, and when. Our line might only be a mile in length at the moment, but it does have three stations, a tunnel and is very steeply graded. Trains depart Horsehay and Dawley staiton on a 1 in 36 gradient, and on a curve! The ruling gradient between Horsehay and Dawley and Lawley Stations in 1 in 40. Our locomotives certainly have to work hard going uphill! Our steam engines will also take water at Horsehay and Dawley station during the day. Watch on the platform as the driver and fireman refill the thirsty engine from the water tower. You can break your journey throughout the day to visit our other attractions, and take a bite to eat and drink at our tearoom before rejoining the train to continue your journey. |
Ride on the 2ft narrow gauge railway (included in your ticket price)
Due to reopen in 2025 (please check before you travel), our narrow gauge railway runs in a large circuit close to Horsehay Pool. We plan to run services with either our steam tram, or Ruston diesel, both of which have not been operational for a number of years.
The narrow gauge railway will been running on the same days as the standard gauge railway is operating (subject to availability) |
Visit our extensive model railway (included in your ticket price)
Railway house is host to our 00 gauge and N gauge model Railways. The main Layout is the former Top Link Stafford Layout originally built by the late Tony Clarke along with a further five members of the Top Link Model Railway Group in Stafford. The layout was built over a period of two years. The layout was originally built in ten sections and was used at various exhibitions across the country from 1976. The layout arrived at the Telford Steam Railway in 1994. Extensive restoration of the layout was carried out by our volunteers to restore the layout to an operational standard, and over the last 27 years, the layout has been restored updated and maintained. The latest addition to Railway House is a small 6x2ft N gauge. This layout was constructed to demonstrate a simple and reasonably sized layout, and work is currently underway to modernise the layouts with Dual Control for Analogue and Digital Systems.

The Picnic area
Take a walk around Horsehay Pool
Horsehay Pool is located adjacent to Telford Steam Railway. The surrounding village grew up around the Horsehay Ironworks, constructed by Abraham Darby II between 1754-7. Horsehay Pool was created by the building of a dam on a nearby stream, the stored water then provided the power source for the works.
Horsehay Pool is a now an approx 3 hectare site comprised of a large mature lake along with woodland and grassed surrounds. Visitors are able to walk around the pool and enjoy the wooded area and pocket park, which includes Sycamore, Horse-chestnut, Pedunculate Oak, Weeping Willow and Alder trees. The following birds have been observed around the pool: Great Crested Grebe, Long-tailed tit, Goosander, Blackbird, Robin, House Sparrow, Moorhen, Coot, Mallard, Grey Heron, Canada Goose, Greater Spotted Woodpecker as well as many others. Fish in the pool include Bream, Roach, Tench and Carp which makes the pool popular with Anglers. |

Whatever the season, there is always lots of interesting things to see and hear at Horsehay Pool, before you return to the railway for your next train ride!
