Telford Steam Railway is proudly 100% volunteer run. Every penny that we raise is ploughed back into the maintenance and preservation of our current Infrastructure, locomotices and rolling stock. If we have any surplus, it goes towards realising our dream of returning a heritage railway line to the world heritage site of the Ironbridge Gorge. We do not receive any external funding.
It currently costs us about £600 to steam 5619 each day on our services. Using a diesel can cost up to £100 a day
5619's next 10 yearly overhaul (which could be in 2025) will cost at least £150,000.
On 3 June 2024 our signal box at Lightmoor Junction, which we lease from Network Rail, was broken into and vandalised. All of the windows were smashed from the inside and paint thrown on the interior walls and structures. Historic signalling equipment was destroyed and the stove stolen. £1000s worth of damage will now need to be repaired and replaced once again to bring it back to it's 1950's condition, as we had already suffered an arson attack on the signal box in 2009.

Your money has gone towards purchasing new glass for the windows and having it fitted so that the signal box will be weather tight for the Winter. We still need your help though to replace the destroyed signalling equipment and stove, remove the graffiti and paint and install additional security.
