The station name boards at Spring Village and Horsehay and Dawley have been repainted and reinstalled ready for our 2024 season which starts on Sunday 31st March. The model railway exhibition has been cleaned and tested. Additional screens have been erected to help our visitors when watching the trains. The tram boiler has had its chimney trial fitted. More of the tram body continues to be cleaned, prepared and painted in primer. The new tram shed has been invaluable to enable work to continue during all the rain we have been having. Spring Village waiting room has been cleared, and is now being repainted on the inside. Once this has been completed, the waiting room will house our exhibition of photographs from the Rail Camera Club. The Horsehay and Dawley waiting room has had two more pictures put up and is now ready to welcome our passengers. The windows on Class 142 Pacer No. 142058 have been resealed. This will hopefully cure the damp problem which occurred over Winter and not helped by the constant rainy weather. Work continues at the tearoom preparing the ground for the kitchen container. This should arrive shortly and be ready for the existing tearoom to be closed and re fitted the week beginning 15th April. Further clearing of the Coronation Way footpath has taken place. We are now at the stage to let contractors in to finish off clearing and moving the larger and heavier trees. Wood for creating the pathway has been purchased. On Friday we had a corporate open day. We invited a number of local companies to the railway and had a great day showing our guests all the great things that the railway is doing, and where we can build stronger relationships together. The day was very successful, and something we would like to do again. Saturday was our volunteer open day. We welcomed around 20 prospective members and volunteers who saw our carriage restorations, loco maintenance, tram overhaul and much much more. Hopefully some, if not all, our visitors will decide to volunteer with us in the future. On Sunday we welcomed local band “Manor Heights” to the railway, who were shooting a video for their latest single. The instruments were set up in the BSO carriage where the band played, and further shots were taken in the TSO’s, Toad brakevan and on the track going through Heathhill Tunnel. No trains were running during the filming of the video. The railway had a stand at the MIOG O gauge model railway show at the Heritage Centre at Crewe. If you were there, I hope you came and said ‘Hello’. Thanks to Ian, Jacob, Antony and Mark for the additional information and photographs used in this update. We reopen to the public on 31st March with our Easter Specials. FREE Easter Egg Hunt for all traveling children (under 15). GWR 0-6-2T steam engine No 5619 will be hauling our trains. First departure from Spring Village is at 11am, with further departures at 12pm, 1:30pm, 2:30pm and 3:30pm. Ticket prices Adult £10, Children £7, Family £32. Telford Steam Railway are proud to have signed an agreement with the National Wagon Preservation Group to enable their Coalfish MHA 394001 to be based at the railway (see news item below for more details).
The tram body continues to be worked on, with steam cleaning of the frames and and preparation of parts for repainting. The restoration of BR Class 03 D2051 is progressing, with the engine now being cleaned. Air pressure for the cleaning gun was provided by Ruston and Hornsby Class DS88 “Hector” The wicks for the oil pots on GWR 56XX No 5619 have been replaced and trimmed. Cleaning of some of the ‘hard to reach’ areas on the frames has also taken place. We expect 5619 to be in service on 31st March. Volunteers have been working hard on the model railway to ensure it is ready for when the railway reopens. New screens have been put in on part of the layout to prevent the models from being accidentally touched or knocked off the rails. The brick bases are now in place at the tearoom for the new kitchen container. Horsehay & Dawley waiting room now has pictures, a mirror and a clock hung on the walls. This has really transformed the ‘feel’ of the room, and hopefully makes it somewhere where people will want to stay a while to browse the second hand books or just listen to the birds singing outside. The waiting room doors at Spring Village have been repainted. The toilets at Spring Village continue to be repainted Thanks to Jacob for the additional information and photos used in the update A volunteer open day will take place on Saturday 23rd March. Everyone is welcome to come and see the many opportunities we have on offer. See our carriage restoration, steam tram overhaul and loco maintenance. Enjoy a ride over the line behind one of our diesels, view the model railway and speak to our current volunteers over a cup of tea or coffee in our tearoom. There are two sessions on the day and volunteers can join either the 10am or 1pm session. See https://www.telfordsteamrailway.co.uk/volunteer-open-day-23.html for details We reopen to the public on 31st March Our latest news video, Railway Roundup 3, is now available to watch on our YouTube channel https://youtu.be/74ZM28bWlc4?si=3rLOnQfAEjj12S_u Our 2024 special events can be found here https://www.telfordsteamrailway.co.uk/events. Sign up at https://www.twincl.co.uk/support/telford-steam-railway The National Wagon Preservation Group (NWPG) and the Telford Steam Railway (TSR) are very pleased to announce the homing of pioneer Coalfish MHA 394001. The coalfish is synonymous with the engineering trains of the last 27 years and have proved their flexibility in moving fresh or spoiled ballast and sand across the UK.
At the Telford's 2024 Annual General Meeting, Will Snook was introduced to TSR members and gave a small background on the wagon's history and relevance for being based at the TSR. Mark Paynter, TSR's Director of Training & Development said "We are so excited to work alongside the NWPG to offer this wagon a home and see it put to use with our engineering trains for many years to come". Will (Co-Chair NWPG) said "After the purchase, I knew exactly who to call, Mark and I have worked closely together in the past and have had many conversations regarding Telford's need for some appropriate rolling stock. We are humbled to be working alongside such amazing people at the TSR". The underframe was donated to this particular wagon from HAA 365673 (Lot 3997, Shildon 1981) and was converted in 1997 into its current guise at RFS, Doncaster. The intention will be to restore the wagon to as-converted state in 1997 over the coming years whilst it provides more years of valuable service in preservation. Andrew Davies, Director of Traction & Rolling Stock at the TSR said "We hope that both teams can learn from each other and strengthen their knowledge for the betterment of heritage. This wagon will prove a useful asset for our air-braked engineering train". Chris Thorn, Social Media Manager of the NWPG, said "The coalfish is the final piece of the story in the MGR history, yet this wagon also stands on its own merits as a stalwart of engineering in the privatisation era. The response from our followers has been phenomenal, were so glad this wagon has been preserved for generations to come". The wagon will soon be delivered to the TSR at Horsehay and will be given a full inspection to ensure it is safe and functional for use. The wagon will then be put into action to earn its keep. The NWPG is currently raising funds via their Facebook page selling hidden gems and railwayana to help pay for the move. If you wish to become a member or contribute to the costs of wagon, please head on over to their website at www.nwpg.co.uk The Telford Steam Railway is always on the lookout for volunteers and donations and their website is https://www.telfordsteamrailway.co.uk/ The picture below shows Will Snook (NWPG) (second from right) and Mark Paynter (TSR) (second from left) with the signed agreement for the basing of Coalfish MHA 394001 along with fellow Directors Chris Whitehead and Rich Owen. The tram shed has had a metal roof, a strong plastic side and electric lighting added. The tram and coach now have a waterproof shed to allow restoration to continue in relative comfort. This was useful straight away on Sunday, when despite the continual rain, the cylinder and piston were removed from the tram body for for probably the first time since it was built, and over 40 years of grease, oil and muck continue to be scraped off ready for steam cleaning and repainting.
More tree and wood clearance took place on the route of the Coronation Walk. Our hardy volunteers worked through the rain to open up more of the new footpath, this time at the Barrow Crossing. The brakes on the Telehandler have been fixed and it is now back in use. One of its first jobs was to start to move all the road crossing materials from the car park back into the rear yard. Unfortunately there has been a delay to the work planned for the road crossing and it will now happen after we have reopened to the public. In the BSO, the flip down guards seats are being reupholstered The fuel injector has been added to the narrow gauge Ruston Diesel. Wooden Shuttering for the concrete foundations of the new kitchen have made A new “animal” has been spotted in the picnic area! The second hand bookstall in Horsehay and Dawley waiting room has been completed. The latest Veteran’s breakfast took place on Sunday. We welcomed the largest number of Veterans so far to enjoy a good meal and company at our tearoom. Due to the ongoing rain, much tea was drunk in the afternoon. A volunteer open day will take place on Saturday 23rd March. Everyone is welcome to come and see the many opportunities we have on offer. See our carriage restoration, steam tram overhaul and loco maintenance. Repairs to the roof and doors continue on BR Goods Van No. 767478 whilst it is still in the loco shed. This van is used as our ticket office and gift shop, so once the repairs have been completed, will be shunted back into Spring Village platform. The Telehandler is also being repaired, with work being done on the brakes. The Lawley station platform edge supports have been prepared and painted. These will now need to be installed Pacer 142058 has been swapped with 144013 so that it can be deeper cleaned ready for the new season. The opportunity was taken to do some Pacer driver refreshers. Repairs to 144013 have not yet started. The seat carcasses for MK2 BSO No. 9406 continue to be painted. A shelf has been added to the bar area. The floor of MK2 TSO No. 5221 continues to be removed so that repairs to the coach supports and frames can be started. The Gentlemen toilets at Spring Village are being repainted. The covers for the tram chain, water tank supports have been rubbed down and painted. Telford Steam Railway appeared at the Gauge O Guild Spring Show at Kettering on Saturday, and the Redditch MRC Exhibition on Sunday. It is great to be back out promoting the railway and meeting new and old friends and supporters. The railway will be holding a Volunteer open day on Saturday 23rd March and prospective volunteers are welcome to see what we have to offer. We have vacancies across all departments, and if you have skills and experience in engineering, bricklaying, welding, construction, applying for grants, admin, retail, catering we really would love to meet you!
