A LNER 20T brake van has arrived at the railway. Believed to be built at Darlington in 1937, its design became the basis for the standard BR brake van. Very little detail is known about this brake van and if anyone can provide further information, it would be gratefully received. It has been purchased privately, and was previously at Colne Valley Railway. The new owner will start its restoration with the plan that once it is restored, it will become part of our demonstration freight train.
Two small dips in the track at Spring Village platform have been ‘jacked and packed’ to allow smoother running. The pedestrian crossing at Spring Village has been replaced and enlarged. This will not only make crossing the track easier for everyone but will also help the flow of passengers leaving the platform during Polar ExpressTM. Restoration on MK2 BSO No. 9046 continues with the seats being refitted. Thank you to Kev and Jacob for the additional information and photographs used in this update. We are next open to the public on Sunday 28th July for our Model Railway Exhibition at the railway and at Horsehay Village Hall. Sign up at https://www.twincl.co.uk/support/telford-steam-railway On Sunday we welcomed Mel to the railway. Mel is the daughter of Dennis Blundell. Dennis volunteered at TSR for over 30 years, running the model railway. Sadly Dennis died recently and Mel came back to the railway to take a look around and give her late father a fitting send off. It was a pleasure to see Mel and to tell her how much Dennis meant to us, and how he is missed by all at the railway.
The gates across the shed road have been painted. The brick pedestrian crossing is nearing completion. The crossing is wider than the one it replaced, which will make if much safer for passengers when they enter or leave the platform. The contractors have completed the work in reversing the trackbed camber between Horsehay & Dawley station and the barrow crossing. Track will now be relaid and ballasted when volunteers time allows. It will have to be relaid before the Polar Express TM trains run in November. Our gardeners have been busy. The conifer has been removed from the garden in front of the tearoom. It was getting too big and was growing at an angle which meant it could topple over if not checked. The next few weeks will be spent weeding cutting back and dead heading. Thank you to Doug, Jacob and Paul for the additional information and photographs used in this update. We are next open to the public on Sunday 21st July for our Pirates and Princesses Day. This is to allow contractors on site to reverse the trackbed camber. This will further assist the new drainage system which was installed last year. The track will then be relaid ready for our Polar Express TM trains but also as the start of the relaying of track to Doseley. Shed road has now been jacked and packed, and connected to the new road crossing, allowing vehicles to access the shed. The new pedestrian crossing is now being built across the track, using brick paving. The new gate across the track has been installed. Restoration of BR class 03 D2051 continues in the shed, with the liners being removed from the cylinders. Cannock & Rugeley Colliery brake van No.2 continues to be worked on by its owner. Deep holes have been drilled into the veranda frames to secure it to the existing brackets and rebates have been cut for planking. It has all been dry fitted to check that it fits. Despite the torrential rain on the day, our miniature traction engine event saw a number of miniature and full size traction engines at Spring Village station on Sunday to entertain our visitors. All of the wood for the tram coach have been varnished. The baseplate, and the frame it will sit on has been painted black.
