Permanent Way and Infrastructure

The P-Way gang were out in force on Saturday working on the running line close to Heath Hill Tunnel. Rails and sleepers were lifted, the ballast dug out and the rails and sleepers put back in. The line was then ‘jack and packed’ and tamped.

On Sunday we had our ‘Anything Goes Diesel Gala. This was a great success with good passenger numbers. In action on the day were BR Class 08 diesel 08757 ‘Eagle’, North British diesel hydraulic No. 27414 ‘Tom’, Ruston and Hornsby diesel mechanical No. 382824 ‘Hector’, Class 142 Pacer No. 142058 with Ruston and Hornsby diesel mechanical No. 313394 ‘Jammo’ making a surprise appearance on passenger trains in the afternoon. We have had lots of very positive feedback about the event which is great to hear. One of our military veteran friends, Colin, had his first ride on a train since 1955! Hopefully it won’t be as long again before his next one.

One of our volunteers has successfully passsed out as a diesel driver. Congratulations!

We have released a new video on out YouTube channel giving an up date on all the things that have been going on at the railway. We are really excited to share this with you to see the progress that we are making in lots of areas.

Hopefully you will find it interesting, please like and subscribe to our channel for more videos like this.

We need your help!

A new steam boiler for our tram has been sourced, and is available to buy for £8500. Not only is this approximately half the price we were quoted to build a new boiler, but will also mean that our tram will be back in steam and working much quicker as well.

Please help us to buy this boiler before it is too late, by donating to our steam tram boiler appeal.

Every penny donated makes a massive difference to us. Thank you for your support.

The railway is next open on Sunday 24th September when GWR 56XX 0-6-2T No. 5619 will be hauling our trains.

Departures will be from Spring Village (TF4 2NF - free car park) and a special timetable will be in operation

Tickets £10 Adults, £8 Children and, £30 Family (2 Adults and 2 Children). Tickets allow unlimited travel on our standard gauge trains, entry into our model railway exhibition and (if open) museum. Sorry there are no Senior/Concession fares and Season tickets are not valid at this event.

The gift shop, second hand book stall and picnic area will also be open

The Furnaces Tearoom will be offering hot and cold drinks, ice creams, snacks, cakes and light meals to eat in or take away. Breakfast is now being served between 10:15am and 12pm.

The Phoenix Miniature Railway will also be open for rides (additional charges apply)

Our online shop has been revamped and enlarged to include railway books, take n play Thomas and Friends, soft toys and other items for sale.

We currently have an appeal to buy a new boiler for our narrow gauge steam tram. You can help us greatly by donating at

As a thank you, we are offering rewards for certain levels of donations, although every single one is gratefully received and will help put our tram back into operation.

Please also consider supporting Telford Steam Railway through the Telford and Wrekin Community Lottery, which is open to anyone in the UK over 16 years old. This weekly draw gives you the opportunity to win prizes up to £25,000. Tickets cost £1 per week and 50p from each ticket sale goes directly to the railway.
