GWR 56xx 0-6-2 tank engine No 5619 The remaining boiler tubes have been swept clean. Permanent way (P-Way) No further track at Horsehay and Dawley has been lifted this week. A number of sleepers have been de chaired in Spring Village yard. These sleepers will either be recycled, or sold for garden use. This week the volunteers have mainly been getting everything ready for the Multiple Mayhem event over the bank holiday weekend. The Pacers were all given a good clean inside with the seats vacuumed and dusted, and the floors mopped. Final maintenance checks were made and Spring Village platform and yard was shunted to get everything into position to begin on Saturday. The event didn’t get off to the best start with the class 108 being unavailable for the first train. Class 144 Pacer No 144013 was used instead. Our engineers worked their magic though and the 108 was soon back up and running. They were called upon again later in the day when Class 142 Pacer No. 142004 developed a fault, but this was quickly resolved. We were not so busy on the first day, but perhaps this was because we are not normally open on Saturdays. We had many more visitors on the Sunday, and more again on Bank Holiday Monday. Many travelled long distances just to attend our event. It was great to see the railway busy, and people enjoying themselves. The Pacers and the 108 performed faultlessly after the first day, and we were able to keep to time. There were a number of shunt moves after each arrival at Spring Village to get the next unit ready for departure, and with an intensive timetable, there always seemed to be something moving! The Phoenix Miniature Railway was in action on all three days, as was the model railway exhibition and Furnaces tearoom, which were all very popular. The weather was (just about) dry enough for the 2nd hand bookstore to open for the first time this season. Typically there were no books available on Pacers or DMUs that we could sell, still there is always next time! Thank you to all our fantastic volunteers who have worked so hard to make the event happen, and to all our visitors for making it such a success. We hope to see you again at our next multiple mayhem event in June. We currently have an appeal to buy a new boiler for our narrow gauge steam tram.
