A unique experience to drive Avonside No. 1919 'Cranford'

Each course will take three participants, who will each be able to drive and fire between Spring Village and Lawley Village, and also have the opportunity to drive and fire to and from Horsehay & Dawley Station. On your course, you could be hauling up to two coaches and a brake van.

Each participant can be accompanied by up to two guests for free and can add extra guests for £12 each who may travel on the train during the course.

YOUR EXPERIENCE

Your Driver Experience Day starts at 09:00 at Spring Village and finishes there at approximately 15:00

The day begins with an explanation of the day's events and a safety briefing from the crew. You'll then meet the locomotive and learn about all its elements. The morning will be spent experiencing how to bring an engine round and preparing it for the day ahead, before its time to drive. 

Once the loco is in steam, you'll take some trial runs to get used to the engine, before taking the controls yourself and journeying across the entire line. The three participates will regularly swap throughout the day, before your final challenge of tackling Horsehay Bank.

Lunch is provided for the participants and guests, before the final trips with your guest onboard the coach.

INFORMATION

Your Driver Experience Day starts at 0900 at Spring Village and finishes there at approximately 1500. The course includes:

• Explanation of the day's events and safety briefing
• Lunch at the Furnaces Tearoom for participants and guests
• Free year's membership of the Telford Horsehay Steam Trust for the participant, including member's benefits (worth up to £25)​

If there is an unexpected mechanical fault with the locomotive the experience may have to be postponed. The purchaser will be contact in advance.

We plan to use Avonside No. 1919 'Cranford' for our steam driver experiences in 2026 (subject to availability).

Please note that participants must be over 18 yrs and must be fit enough to climb onto and off the locomotive from ground level.
Please wear clothing (not polyester) that covers your arms and legs, that you don't mind getting dirty (overalls are good), and covered shoes (ideally steel toe capped boots)
