GROWTHAt this stage it is hard to put a cost on completing a scheme as out lined, due to the many unknown outcomes. What can be estimated is the benefits of such a scheme.
Telford Steam Railway estimate, that based on other similar railway based schemes it is not unreasonable to expect to carry in excess of 100,000 passengers, generating a revenue of approximately £2,000,000. The scheme would also help overcome the lack of parking within the Ironbridge Gorge by providing its park and ride services for visitors. |

EVENTS EXPANSIONThe extra line would also enable Telford Steam Railway to grow its Polar Express Train Ride Experience, which is already oversubscribed by at least 200%.
This alone could add an additional £1,000,000 to the turnover giving an overall turnover of £4,000,000. Our other popular events throughout the year could also be expanded to fit with the new locations across the line. |
PUTTING BACK INTO THE LOCAL ECONOMYA study by an all party parliamentary group on heritage railways, has shown that for every £1 spent on a heritage railway, there is an additional benefit of £2.70 to the wider locality, meaning a possible yearly total boost of £15,000,000 to the local economy.
To grow Telford Steam Railway from its current volunteer led organisation, to one that could operate a service on 200+ days a year, with the above turnover, the directors expect to create 15 full time positions and around 100 seasonal jobs. |
