The Steaming to Ironbridge project is divided into several stages :-

  • Stage 1 :- Northwards from Horsehay through Heath Hill Tunnel to a new terminus on Lawley Common.
  • Stage 2 :- Southwards to Lightmoor, a distance of 1.5miles.
  • Stage 3 :- Onwards from Lightmoor and across the River Severn to a terminus near Buildwas Abbey.

Stage 1 Appeal

Lawley Common looking across the earthworks to the northern portal of Heath Hill Tunnel. Telford Steam Railway, owned and operated by the Telford & Horsehay Steam Trust Ltd, has made steady progress towards its goal of extending the existing line since its creation in the mid 1970's.

The aim of the Steaming to Ironbridge appeal is at present focused on raising sufficient funds to develop the Lawley site (Steaming to Ironbridge Stage 1).

The current southern end of track at Telford Steam Railway, between the Cheshire Cheese bridge and Doseley halt.

The biggest and hungriest project undertaken by TSR, by far, is the earthmoving, fencing and drainage work. TSR is working with W.S. Atkins Ltd (Railway Division), Telford and Wrekin Council and the Lawley Development Consortium to put the final plans before the planning department for aproval so that work can commence in 2006. This is the groundwork required to create a trackbed for the northern extension to Lawley Common. This work is absolutely essential to the future of Telford Steam Railway, and it is vital that we raise the estimated £26,500 required to complete this year's work. Whilst we have succeeded in raising much of this through annual revenue there is still a significant amount to be raised.

The Deal :- if you donate £25 (or more) to the Lawley Project (although any contribution would be welcome) your name will go on a register. When this year's work is finished you will be entitled to a train ride through the tunnel to view the work, followed by a trip back to Horsehay & Dawley for complementary refreshments. Most of all, however, you will have the satisfaction of having made a significant contribution to this imaginative, popular, and strategically important project!

Please make your contributions to the Treasurer, via the link below. For taxpayers who are willing to do so, filling in a gift aid form will greatly enhance the value of their donation.

Thank you in anticipation!
