Drive a Steam Locomotive at Telford Steam Railway

GOOD NEWS We have decided to ABSORB the VAT price rises, allowing us to keep our prices unchanged.

People from all walks of life and of all ages have a love of steam trains. Many would relish the chance to drive a steam engine. Well now is your chance! In addition to the Full Day course, which Telford Steam Railway runs on our standard gauge steam locomotives and our 2ft gauge Steam Tram, we can offer other driver experience courses on request.

All courses consist of a safety talk and operation of the locomotive, and then you get the chance to take the controls !

Please note that courses are only available from Easter to September ( Advance booking is essential. )

Courses currently offered include:-

Steam Tram Half Day (morning)

This course offers one to one tuition on the preparation, driving and firing of our unique two foot gauge steam tram. The course starts at 8:00am and includes safety checks, lighting up and oiling round the tram, followed by instruction on driving and firing. The candidate will then drive the tram, under instruction, in realistic conditions. The course is available on selected Sundays and Bank Holidays during the running season and finishes at 12:00 noon. One year's membership of the TSR is included in the price.

Steam Tram Half Day (afternoon)

This course offers one to one tuition on driving and firing our unique two foot gauge steam tram. The course starts at 2:00pm and includes safety checks, oiling round the locomotive followed by instruction on driving and firing the tram. The candidate will then drive the tram, under instruction, in realistic conditions. The course is available on selected Sundays and Bank Holidays during the running season and finishes at 4:00pm. One year's membership of the TSR is included in the price.

Steam Engine Half Day

This course offers one to one tuition on driving and firing a steam locomotive. By concentrating on manoeuvring and shunting, candidates will gain an appreciation of the skills involved in driving a steam locomotive. Although booked individually, candidates are taught in pairs. The course starts at 7:00 am, finishing before 1:00 pm, and includes safety checks, lighting up, oiling round the locomotive and driving and firing tuition. Courses are available on selected Sundays and Bank Holidays during the running season and include one year's membership of the TSR.

Steam Engine and Steam Tram Full Day Course

This course offers a full day driver experience providing one to one tuition on driving and firing our steam locomotive and steam tram. By concentrating on manoeuvring and shunting, candidates will gain an appreciation of the skills involved. Candidates will prepare a locomotive including safety checks, lighting up and oiling round followed by approximately two hours driving and firing tuition. Although booked individually, candidates are taught in pairs and rotate around both components of the course. Courses start at 7:00am and are available on selected Saturdays during the running season. Refreshments plus one year's membership of the TSR are included in the price. The course finishes at 5:00pm.

Diesel Half Day

This course offers one to one tuition on driving a diesel locomotive. By concentrating on manoeuvring and shunting, candidates will gain an appreciation of the skills involved in driving a diesel locomotive. Although booked individually, candidates are taught in pairs. The course starts at 9:00 am, finishing before 1:00 pm, and includes preparation checks, oiling round the locomotive and driving tuition. Courses are available on selected Sundays during the running season and include one year's membership of the TSR.

Create your own special day

If you feel that preparation of the locomotives would be too much and you only want to drive or maybe bring a group of friends and spend an hour each on the footplate, or any other ideas to make your own special day please contact the Driver Experience Manager, we are very flexible.
